Drug Education News

News and views from the Drug Education Forum

Education and Health Vol 27, Issue 2

I’ve written an article for Eucation and Health about drug testing in schools which you can download here.

Another article in the same issue is from Margaret Jones, of Ofsted, in which she sets out her views of what has changed for PSHE education since the publication of Time for Change in 2007.

Margaret argues that there have been three significant changes; the well-being indicators for schools, a new inspection framework which will be rolled out this autumn, and Ofsted’s evidence on what is needed to secure high quality PSHE.

On the later point Margaret identifies 6 factors:

  • Strong commitment from senior managers;
  • A member of staff with responsibility for the subject;
  • Dedicated curriculum time;
  • Teachers who feel confident with the subject;
  • Vivid learning experiences for pupils; and
  • Effective use of resources

I’m pleased to see that many of those points reflect the findings we made in our survey of the field.
