Young People’s Alcohol Consumption

Using data from the Guardian’s Data Store I’ve created the following graph which gives some information about how young people between the ages of 16 and 24 are using alcohol.

It’s this age group who are, of course the principle audience for the Know Your Limits campaign.

Pathways to Problems, the ACMD report of a few years ago, said there were 1.9 million in this age range who drink more than twice the recommended daily alcohol limit at least once a week.  They went on to say:

The most alarming development in the past decade has been the growth in the number of young women who are drinking frequently and to excess. During this time, the proportion of women drinking more than twice the recommended weekly limit has doubled. Between 1992 and 2002, average weekly consumption of alcohol by women aged 16–24 in England doubled from seven to 14 units.
