Nottingham UK’s first ‘Early Intervention City’

Children and Young People Now:

Nottingham has become the UK’s first ‘Early Intervention City’, with the launch of a raft of programmes designed to improve the life chances of its poorest children and stop them drifting into crime.

These include a family nurse project to help teenage mums, a mentoring scheme for young people, greater support for victims of domestic violence and initiatives to tackle drug and alcohol abuse.

BBC:

A £1m programme of lessons has also been introduced in some of the city’s schools to help children talk about their feelings rather than resort to confrontation.

Graham Allen, Labour MP for Nottingham North, also wants every 11-year-old in Nottingham to be taught about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

24dash.com quotes Paul Ennals, Chief Executive of the NCB:

“In Nottingham, like in other cities, there are families who have not worked for two generations. If their parents have failed in work and are in trouble with the law they (the children) will learn that’s the way they live.

“It saves money in the long run. If you have a young man in drug rehabilitation it costs £250,000 a year, but the cost of family support that makes it less likely that he needs it only costs a fraction of that. The problem is where do you invest, which child do you invest in?”

The story gets lots of coverage, see here for links.
