Advice for mentors and befrienders

FRANK has some new guidance out for those delivering mentoring or befriending services.  They say:

Mentors and befrienders will have different levels of drug knowledge and experience depending upon the nature of their programme. Different relationships will also require different levels of ‘intervention’. Mentors and befrienders need to use their judgement and assess things on a case-by-case basis. Above all they should remember that dialogue is key. An important part of the role is about enabling and motivating their mentee or befriendee. Listening and talking about the risks of substance misuse will help enable them to make informed decisions for themselves in their everyday lives.

There are sections on:

  • young people and drugs prevalence, impact and signs;
  • risks vulnerable young people and drug use;
  • the law drugs in the family, legal issues;
  • the mentor or befriender role protocols and best practice; and
  • further information
