Cigarettes could be forced beneath shop counters and banned from pub vending machines under new government proposals. But would the move stop children from smoking or simply make them more tempted to try? Emily Dennis reports.
It is an age-old problem that by making something illegal or unobtainable it becomes instantly more desirable.
Take cigarettes. As a teenager I was acutely aware that they were off-bounds, dangerous and bad for you. I also knew that some of the ‘cool’ girls from my school occasionally bunked off to have the odd puff up in the woods.
