What’s happened to PSHE in Primary School?

Ever since Doreen Massey raised the issue in the House of Lords I’ve wanted to see the research about the teaching time devoted to PSHE in primary schools.

I have now been sent the link to a presentation by Bill Boyle at Manchester University.

Here are the key slides; in each PSHE is the last collumn on the right.

Key Stage 1 1997 - 2004

PSHE KS2

If I’m reading this right then what the research says, amongst other things, is that between 1997 and 2004 PSHE teaching time at KS1 dropped from 5.1% to 3.6% and at KS2 down from 4.4% to 3.2% – both down more than a quarter!

Let’s not forget that this is where the Prime Minister wants additional efforts to be made around drug education.
