The Daily Mail report a speech by independent school headmistress Pat Langahm:
Failure to prosecute Kate Moss after she was pictured allegedly snorting cocaine could encourage girls to experiment with drugs, warns a public school head.
The decision not to charge the supermodel undermined schools’ anti-drugs campaigns, says Pat Langham, president of the Girls’ Schools Association.
It sends out a message to children that taking drugs held few adverse consequences.
I know that fear of discovery is a strong motivator for some young people, but I’m not sure that young people look at Kate Moss and say if she gets away with it, with all her wealth and celebrity, so will I.
That said the young people I’ve talked to have been consistent in saying they don’t think that the media focus on celebrity drug and alcohol use is particularly helpful in setting out positive messages about health.
So, as I keep on coming back to, the relationship between young people and celebrity drug use is pretty complicated.
