The Birmingham Post have picked up on Jim Knight’s comments:

Criminal gangs are infiltrating Birmingham schools and children as young as nine are being used as drugs mules, it has been claimed.

Gangs were active in ten Birmingham schools with others in Manchester and London, Education Minister Jim Knight told a Commons inquiry.

And one head warned children aged nine had been caught in the “despicable” business of drug gangs.

The Birmingham angle is provided by Tony Howell, strategic director for Children, Young People and Families, at Birmingham City Council, who is quoted saying:

“Quite often young people’s identification with gangs does not go any further than just this. Any evidence of criminal or unacceptable behaviour in schools is referred to the police.”
