The BBC reports on a survey from YoungMinds:

Half of young people using cannabis suffer side effects such as paranoia and blackouts, a UK survey suggests.

More than 80% of the 727 young people in their teens and early 20s polled by YoungMinds had tried the drug - the vast majority before they were 18.

The charity is calling for urgent research on the effects of cannabis on the developing teenage brain.

It is releasing guidance for young people and professionals on the effects cannabis may have on mental health.

I can’t immediately see the guidance on their website, but they do have a section of the site which looks at alcohol, drugs and gambling.

Update: Community Care covers the same ground and the guidance is now on the YoungMinds website.

What do you think of http://www.talktofrank.com

Hi, which aspect of the site were you thinking about?

As far as we can tell there’s lots of good accurate information there and it seems like a reasonable attempt to communicate directly with young adults about drugs (but I’m not in the target age group so…).

What it can’t do (on its own) is talk to children and young people about their decisions, help them explore how to take responsibility for their lives, or prepare them for any consequences that flow from that.

That’s why we advocate for universal drug education at school, and for drug education in other places like youth settings. That is why it is very important that parents talk to their children about their lives, and about drugs.

Its also why we would like our public debate on drugs issues to be led by evidence as much as it is by belief.
